There is a flood of colours in his paintings that reflect unlikely circumstances and childhood imaginations. This is the world where the oceans merge with the sky, the folklores become one with contemporary reality. Here you see the tiger and the lamb live together in their struggle for survival. Mutuality and battle are the two sides of the same coin here!
The creative journey of Anup Kumar Chand, who was born in 1973 at Bhograi in Balasore district of Orissa, captures the observational strength of both the realistic and post-realistic (and the conscious and subconscious) state in a microscopic level. It is the beauty of the unlikely scenarios that make his works enchanting, and the wild flow of colours and textures further enhance this. Here we come face to face with the wild illusions and the unbridled imaginations. This world of fantasy, which sounds bizarre at times, not only touches your innards but starts a conversation with you on a personal level, as if you are travelling through a folklore.
In the landscape portrayal of Anup, one can experience the colourful world of animal and plant forms, which add a decorative value to the works. While there is a spontaneity and playfulness, there is also a socio-political and ecological dimension to it, which underscores the struggles for survival as wells. The apparently surreal portrayal of a tree that grows over a metal fencing, and taking the foreign object within its folds, points to this element of his creative world.
Moreover, there is a kind of juxtaposition of mutually conflicting images like tiger and a goat in the same frame. Apart from the surreal narration, it has a political dimension here and the wild cat in the surreal landscapes, which recurs in his frames, add to that political dimension as well. But politics is subtle that is concealed in the flavours of navrasas that he depict using various idioms and iconic symbols. His works have found place in many private collections.
